Oftentimes, work takes priority over everything else, and other times, life takes priority. It’s critical to create a harmonious work-life balance to attain high levels of physical and mental well-being. The first area to focus on is identifying the reasons why you aren’t able to properly balance your work and life:
- Increased responsibilities at work or at home
- Longer hours at work
- Too many outside commitments (community, volunteer work, socially, etc.)
To improve your work-life balance, a few aspects need to be addressed. First and foremost, there’s no such thing as a perfect work-life balance. Remove this notion of perfection and create a realistic schedule for yourself, not a perfect one that appeases everyone else. Following this mantra will not only help you create an efficient and effective schedule, but it will also help you dedicate time in your workweek to pursue hobbies and spend time with your loved ones- which are crucial activities for your overall happiness.
Another way that helps in maintaining an efficient work-life balance, is prioritizing your health, both mental and physical. Overworking yourself as a distraction may prevent you from improving your health. If you need to fit in a yoga session, fit those into your schedule. If you’re recovering from an illness, don’t be afraid to call off from work. If it’s necessary, unplug and take a mini-vacation/staycation. Basically, fill your own cup first.
And lastly, set boundaries. This is critical to maintaining a work-life balance and staying sane throughout the process. This also helps in minimizing overall burnout. Be strict when you clock into work and clock out. If others know that you are prioritizing your schedule, they are more likely to understand it and give you the space to thrive. And best of all, setting boundaries will push you to accomplish the goals and priorities you’ve set for yourself.
